Properties:
Bleaching powder is a pale yellowish powder inorganic compound. It is used for water treatment & as a bleaching agent. It is the main active ingredient of commercial products called bleaching powder, chlorine powder or chlorinated lime.
Due to its slow decomposition in moist air it strongly smells of chlorine. This compound is relatively stable and has greater available chlorine than sodium hypochlorite (liquid bleach).

Usage:

Water Treatment as a disinfectant which is used for disinfecting water to make potable water, Textile Mills as a bleaching agent, Paper Industry, Laundry, Epidemic Control, as an Oxidizer in many industries since it is an oxidizing agent, Sanitation - as a sanitizer in public swimming pools & disinfect drinking water.

Production:

It is produced by treating lime (Ca(OH)2) with chlorine gas.
Safety Measures to be considered:
Bleaching Powder is a strong oxidising agent as it contains a hypochlorite ion at the valence +1 (redox state: Cl+1).
Calcium hypochlorite should not be stored wet & hot or near any acid, organic materials or metals. Its unhydrated form is safer to handle.
